These two sisters lived with their parents. Both had chronic fatigue syndrome and were home-schooled. When the younger girl was diagnosed, her parents began planning to kill the whole family. Months later, they carried out a murder-suicide by strangling both girls and then killing themselves.

The 11-year-old girl took piano lessons. Her 14-year-old sister was intellectually curious and liked learning.

Neighbors remember Antonio as a little boy who made a racket when he jumped up and down. He had a pet guinea pig.

One day the neighbors heard the little boy saying, “‘Please mommy. OK, mommy. I ain’t going to do it no more.'” Antonio’s mother tied him up with belts, put him in the bathtub, doused him in cooking oil, and set him on fire. The fire endangered the other residents of his apartment complex. Antonio’s pet guinea pig was found dead nearby.

Kaylie’s mother neglected her, leaving her care and that of Kaylie’s little brother to her 12-year-old sibling. Kaylie was often left alone in the apartment for hours, and her mother canceled appointments with the children’s aid worker who was supposed to visit.

Summer came and Kaylie was home from school, and her mother refused all the resources she had access to. Kaylie lost weight rapidly. On the day Kaylie died, her mother left her body at a babysitter’s house, not realizing Kaylie had already died of the complications of starvation and dehydration, weighing 31 pounds.

Kaylie liked to ride the swings at the park. Her grandmother always got her a birthday cake and she loved the light from the candles. Her grandmother called her “our little butterfly”.
