Shobhana and her daughter Shruthi, who both had a mental disorder, were living in a house by themselves. After a week of starvation, Shobhana died and Shruthi was found weak from hunger.

When Yonatan’s teachers reported that he was hungry, stealing food, and had come to school with a black eye, Yonatan’s mother decided to take him out of school. She told everyone she had sent him to Mexico to a special school. Instead, she locked him in the closet.

For three years before his death, Yonatan’s mother locked him up, abused him, and fed him very little. To keep him quiet, she sedated him with sleeping pills for so long that he developed pressure sores from not moving. Yonatan died of starvation, weighing 34 pounds.

Kathryn, frail and not able to take care of herself, was abandoned by her roommates, who had been acting as caregivers to some extent. They moved out of the house they all lived in, leaving her behind. The house had no air conditioning and was uninhabitably filthy. Though the former roommates stopped in to “check on” her, they never called for medical help even though Kathryn’s condition was visibly getting worse. They never helped her or even gave her food or water. Eight to ten days after she was abandoned, Kathryn was dead.

Perpetrator: Jennifer Susan Poulos and Debra Germain Poulos; both charged with neglect of an elderly or disabled adult. The charges were dropped because the two women were determined not to have been legally responsible for Kathryn’s care.
