Kathryn Ashe

Details:
Kathryn, frail and not able to take care of herself, was abandoned by her roommates, who had been acting as caregivers to some extent. They moved out of the house they all lived in, leaving her behind. The house had no air conditioning and was uninhabitably filthy. Though the former roommates stopped in to “check on” her, they never called for medical help even though Kathryn’s condition was visibly getting worse. They never helped her or even gave her food or water. Eight to ten days after she was abandoned, Kathryn was dead.

Perpetrator: Jennifer Susan Poulos and Debra Germain Poulos; both charged with neglect of an elderly or disabled adult. The charges were dropped because the two women were determined not to have been legally responsible for Kathryn’s care.

Tammara Killam

Details:
Tammara and her twin sister Brooke, who was also autistic and intellectually disabled, were left alone in an RV by their father. The women had no power or water and had been given nothing but bread and water to eat for a week. They were left without air conditioning or access to water in the 122-degree desert heat. Their father had given them cell phones, but the phones no longer worked.

Tammara died of dehydration; Brooke survived.

Perpetrator: Roger Carter Killam (Father), arrested on two counts of neglect of a vulnerable person.

Rietje Willms

Details:
Rietje was the widow of a successful plumber and real estate dealer. She had inherited his money, and one of her four sons wanted it. When he saw that Rietje was getting dementia, he manipulated her into making him her sole heir. Then he locked her away in his house and neglected her; another of her sons said that sometimes, when he walked by the house, he could hear her in the house, crying to be let out. Rietje was eventually found dead of dehydration, a victim of neglect.

Perpetrator: Hans W. (Son), his girlfriend Susan, and a paid caregiver.

Maria Branco

Details:
Maria and her three children lived together. She and her two daughters Lucy and Filomena, both intellectually disabled, depended on her third child, a son, to care for them. However, he habitually beat and neglected Maria and her daughters.

When Maria was taken to the hospital with injuries from a severe beating, police arrested her son and went to her house to check on her daughters. They were locked into the house and tried desperately to get out to the police officers; when police got the door open, they found both women neglected and battered but alive.

After four days in the hospital, Maria died from sepsis due to her infected bedsores, complicated by starvation and injuries from beatings. Her daughters survived, but are reported to be “in poor condition” as of July 2016.

Perpetrator: Antonio M. Branco (Son), charged with murder, assault and battery upon a person with a disability, and two counts of neglect of a person with a disability.
