Details:
This 73-year-old woman’s daughter-in-law got angry at her, so she allegedly put her in the bath and turned on the hot water. The elderly woman was taken to the hospital and died there of severe burns covering half her body. Her grandchildren, who were too small to help her, had to listen to her cries for help.

Case status:
Her 39-year-old daughter-in-law, charged with causing grave health damage leading to death.

Suneel owned a housing unit and an apartment. His younger brother felt entitled to have them because Suneel was disabled. But Suneel refused to give his brother the property; so his brother allegedly doused Suneel with kerosene and set him on fire. Neighbors tried to save Suneel’s life, but by the time the fire could be extinguished, he had already burned to death.

Airi Kakimoto

Details:
When she was sixteen or seventeen years old, Airi was diagnosed with a mental illness. Within a year, her parents were using a room in their house to serve as a jail for their daughter. It was unheated and bare, and contained only two mats, a makeshift toilet, and a tube connected to a water tank outside. Airi stayed in this room for fifteen or more years. She was denied clothing and fed only once a day. Too thin to keep herself warm, she died of hypothermia, weighing 19 kilograms (42 pounds).

Irene, who had advanced dementia, had outlived all of her children but one–the son she lived with. When she fell and broke her hip, he left her on the floor for five days with her ankles tied with a purple sweater. When she was finally taken to the hospital, she was in bad shape, and died of an infection seventeen days later.
