Lala Mardigan

Details:
Lala lived in a remote part of Australia. She had spent some time in foster care, but returned to her mother at age 18 even though her mother had told the health service she could not care for her. Despite a case worker’s warning that Lala was not being cared for, the health department did not assign her a guardian. At 20, Lala died from malnutrition and infection, a victim of neglect.

Aidan Fenton

Aidan died after a “slapping therapy” workshop, a treatment that included several days of fasting and repeated, hard slaps meant to cause bruising and “release toxins”. He may also have been taken off insulin by his parents.

Liam Milne

Details:
Liam and his brother Ben both had Fragile X, and their mother Susana was six months pregnant with another boy. Their father, who feared that the boys would not be able to cope with their disabilities, bundled his whole family into the car and crashed it into a tree at 90 miles an hour.

Only seven-year-old Ben survived the crash, though he was severely injured. Ben is now living with his aunt, who says he is doing well.

83-year-old woman

Details:
This 83-year-old woman was left on her bed, starving and neglected, until she finally died of pneumonia. She was severely malnourished and filthy, and had been fed by mouth even though her stroke had made it difficult for her to swallow.

Three of her grandchildren are set to testify against their parents for the abuse that ended in their grandmother’s death.

Perpetrator: Her 50-year-old son and his 44-year-old wife, both charged with reckless conduct endangering life and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

Levai Bonnar

Erin Crabtree

Erin was fatally poisoned with codeine by her mother, who staged her death as a suicide and collected life insurance. Five years later, she would kill Erin’s brother Jonathan the same way.

When Erin’s mother was finally arrested, Erin’s sister, also disabled and in her mother’s custody, was found in bad shape from having been repeatedly dosed with sedatives, and was rescued.

Perpetrator: Maree Crabtree (Mother), charged with two counts of murder, grievous bodily harm, torture, fraud, and armed robbery.
