Details:
Levai was beaten, starved, and humiliated by his parents. The abuse eventually proved fatal when Levai died of head injuries.

Levai’s killers nearly escaped justice by claiming the boy had died from falling off a pogo stick.

Perpetrator: Kayla James (Mother), convicted of manslaughter, sentenced to 10½ years; Kodi James Maybir (Mother’s boyfriend), convicted of murder, sentenced to 31½ to 38 years.

Charles Dalziel

Julian Pintar

Details:
Julian died of long-term abuse and neglect. He had been tied to a chair for long periods of time, expected to sleep upright, in a garden shed. He had also been sprayed with cold water and then left in the shed, causing hypothermia which was particularly dangerous to this already thin boy, weakened by malnutrition. By the time he was found unresponsive and taken to the hospital, he was dead. An autopsy also found blood poisoning and internal injuries.

Perpetrator: Stepfather, pleaded guilty to manslaughter; mother, charged with manslaughter.

Tanilla Warrick-Deaves

Details:
Tanila was abused by her stepfather. After a beating, it was obvious that Tanila had a head injury, but her mother, seeing how badly hurt Tanila was, did not call the ambulance because she figured it would be better if Tanila died than if she lived as “a vegetable”. Instead, she put Tanila in a pram, where the little girl took three days to die.

Perpetrator: Donna Deaves (Mother) and Warren Ross (Stepfather), convicted of murder, sentenced to 30-40 years prison.

Isabella Leiper

Kyla Puhle

Details:
Six months before Kyla died, her parents stopped taking her to her day program and instead left her lying, alone, on a bean bag while they went to work. Gradually they fed Kyla less and less, until Kyla died of malnutrition and pneumonia, weighing only 12 kilos.

Perpetrator: Harry Puhle (Father), committed suicide before he could be tried; Angela Puhle (Mother), pleaded guilty to manslaughter, freed with five-year suspended sentence.

Details:
This baby girl was born without any congenital conditions, but because she had skin tags on her ears, her mother believed her daughter had a disability. She had doctors test her over and over, each time with negative results, but became fixed on the idea that the baby had dwarfism. When a friend told her to stop worrying because it wasn’t cancer, she replied that it would be “better to deal with a terminal illness than to spend a lifetime with a dwarf”.

Her mother drowned the six-month-old girl in the bathtub.

Perpetrator: Her mother, sentenced to up to 20 years in a mental health institution; found fit to stand trial in August 2016, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
